No Hope of Getting Rich
The Sociological Institute of Russian Science Academy has released a report on the lower-income Russians, analyzing the biggest segment (43 percent) of the country’s population. Some 16 percent of them are poor indeed and 41 percent are well-being enough. The average income of the poor is 5,300 ruble, while the persons with the lower income earn 7,600 ruble and the well-being poor earn above 13,000 ruble (Russia’s average salary was 16,400 ruble in time of the poll).
In addition to the income breakdown, the breakdown in terms of property is striking. “The lower-income Russians gradually sell the real estate that they have owned before. Their resource state that has been tight even without it is deteriorating,” the analysts of the institute concluded.

Some 75 percent of the Russians in need and 58 percent of those with lower income failed to significantly improve their standing, and 25 percent of the lower-income individuals and 15 percent of the Russians in need succeeded to raise their living standards. The trend points to the conservation of these layers of society, the analysts said.

Passivity is the most common feature of the poor. Some 40 percent of the persons in need, 23 percent of the Russians with lower income and 54 percent of the poor do nothing to improve their living. When it comes to the occupation, the most popular employment is temporarily, overtime and off-hour work. But this trend is more common amid the persons who call themselves rather well-being.
