Airline Delays Extend Holiday Stays
Several hundred people failed to reach Moscow this weekend as the Russian New year's holiday drew to a close. About 40 Russia-bound flights were delayed in Bulgaria, France and Italy. Heavy fog closed all of Bulgaria's airports for three days. On Sunday evening, 200 of the 400 Russian passengers stranded in Sofia were still waiting for flights home.
When KrasAir planes were rerouted from French flights to pick up tourists in Bulgaria, 300 Russians in Grenoble who were supposed to fly to Moscow late Saturday night were left stranded without explanation. They made it to Moscow Sunday afternoon. Fog also delayed a KrasAir flight from Verona, Italy, that was to bring more than 250 passengers to Moscow by midnight Saturday. Passengers there also complained that the situation was not explained to them. They were not offered food or drink and many were not even provided with lodging. That flight took off for Moscow at 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
Meanwhile, accidents at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow grounded three Transaero planes Saturday. In spite of the presence of backup craft, one flight was delayed for three hours and another was delayed until Sunday morning. Transaero has filed a complaint with the Russian federal transportation service in relation to those delays.
