Europe to Fly Bypassing Summit
The Aviation Summit of Russia and EU that Moscow is due to host November 16 and 17 is under the threat of disruption. The sources with Russia’s airlines and Transport Ministry said Europe conditioned participation to the decision, whereby Russia would stop charging foreign airlines for Trans-Siberian overflights.
The Russia-EU Aviation Summit could be disrupted, a source with one of Russia’s airlines said yesterday. “The European delegation has toughly conditioned the summit to passing a definite decision on canceling charges for Trans-Siberian overflights of the European airlines,” the source said.
Some time earlier, the governments in Europe sealed the agreed guidelines for Trans-Siberian direction and Russia’s government is to respond by gradually canceling the flight transit money by 2013. Nowadays, the money generated from Siberian overflights of foreign airlines (roughly $420 million in 2006) goes to Aeroflot.
In the RF Transport Ministry, they officially deny rumors on the summit disruption, but anonymous sources with the ministry confirmed the apprehension. “We are yet undecided about Europe’s demands,” the source said, adding the ministry will send an official answer to the European Commission today.
