Another Suspect in Politkovskaya Case Left Detention Facilities
The prosecutors have released former policeman Oleg Alimov arrested on suspected involvement in the murder of Novaya Gazeta reporter Anna Politkovskaya. One more suspect left the detention facilities earlier. So, only nine people are still under arrest today; two of them were detained for the crimes not related to Politkovskaya’s murder. “The investigation copies scenario of Paul Klebnikov’s case,” a lawyer speculated. “The enforcement officers arrested for Klebnikov were freed from all charges.”
On Monday, Russia’s Prosecutor General Yury Chaika reported to President Vladimir Putin and then to the media the arrest of 10 people in connection with Politkovskaya murder. The breakthrough was hailed worldwide, but very soon, the thrilling case manifested its first flaws jeopardizing the trial.

Private guard Alexey Berkin was the first to leave prison. He was followed by former officer of Moscow police Oleg Alimov. Alimov and some other serving and former enforcement officers were suspected of tracing Politkovskaya and providing the data to the group of Chechens that killed the journalist.

Besides Alimov, two more suspects don’t match this story of prosecutors. It emerged that FSB officer Pavel Ryaguzov and former police major Sergey Khadzhikurbanov have already faced the charges of abduction, breach of inviolability of citizens’ dwellings and office abuse – all of them presented for crimes of 2002.

In Prosecutor General Office, they refused to comment on the case, saying releasing suspects is a common practice. At the same time, apparently agitated by the great extent of the media leak, the prosecutors initiated an office check to find the sources.
