Georgia Fights Back by South Ossetia’s Missile
Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Merab Antadze lashed out at Moscow Monday, blaming on it the aggressive plans against Tbilisi. The minister said the Sunday shooting at Georgian helicopter showed the total lack of efficiency of peacekeeping efforts in the region, as they are under Russia’s control. The response of Moscow was equally ardent. The RF Foreign Ministry accused Tbilisi of creating favorable conditions for provocative actions.
The Sunday shooting at the Mi-8 combat helicopter by the Air Defense of South Ossetia was still the highlight in Tbilisi yesterday. The incident was just another audacious provocation of Tskhinvali authorities and of Russia’s military stationed in the region, said Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli.
But in South Ossetia, they are sure the shooting was provoked by Georgian military that are hatching the seizure of the republic. Tskhinvali (capital of South Ossetia) doubts Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili was on board of the war-tested helicopter. The minister just said he was there to get a cause for the war, Tskhinvali insists.
Moscow wasted no time to lambast Tbilisi for the accusation. “Suffice is to say that the incident happened through fault of Georgia. Those were the Georgian military that violated the conflict zone status by making there a flight prohibited by current regulations, said Yury Popov, ambassador-at-large of Russia’s Foreign Ministry. “The violation has been specified in the report of military observers of Russia, North Ossetia, Georgia and OSCE,” Popov pointed out.
