Georgia Back to Kodori Gorge
The Central Election Commission of Georgia announced Thursday creation of an election district in the Kodori Gorge of Abkhazia, so that its residents could vote for the local executives October 5, 2006. Authorities of unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia called that move of Tbilisi an act of provocation.
Until past summer, the Kodori Gorge had been out of reach of both unrecognized Abkhazia and Tbilisi; field commander Emzar Kvitsiani and his troopers had reigned there.
But in summer, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili regained control of the territory via a military action. The next order of victorious president was to move to Kodori the exile government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.
On Thursday, the Central Election Commission of Georgia added the Kodori Gorge to the 85 election districts of the country, creating the 86th district as a result. A local election commission will appear in no time there and Kodori residents will elect 15 members to the local executive body on October 5.
The response of Sukhumi was hash. “It is another provocation of the Georgian authorities and violation of fundamental agreements of negotiations of Georgia and Abkhazia,” said Abkhaz Foreign Minister Sergey Shamba.
