Syria Vs. Peacekeepers
Syria will close the border with Lebanon if the U.N. peacekeeping troops are stationed along it, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem told his Finnish counterpart Thursday during negotiations (Helsinki chairs the European Union now).
Though not so explicit, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad promised the same a day before. Al-Assad made clear such action wouldn’t be friendly to Syria and give rise to complications.

But Israel presses for peacekeepers deployment along the border of Syria and Lebanon. In violation of the resolution of the U.N. Security Council, Israel says, Hezbollah gets from Syria armaments, including the missiles, which are further fired at the northern territories of Israel.

Syria has dismissed accusations of course. Nevertheless, Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni insists only the urgent deployment of the U.N. troops in Lebanon will hold in check the explosive situation there.
