Prosecutors Have Anti-Terrorist Action Uncovered
Two Moscow students, Oleg Kostyrev and Ilya Tikhomirov, were accused yesterday on count of “killing at least two persons by the publicly dangerous method for reasons of national hatred.” Kostyrev and Tikhomirov staged explosion on Cherkizovo market of Moscow on August 21, 2006, which killed ten people and wounded 49.
Yesterday, Moscow Prosecutor Yury Semin reported complete uncovering of Cherkizovo case. The explosion that broke out on Cherkizovo market August 21 killed ten people and wounded 49; seven victims in the death toll have been identified to-date. They were of different nationality - two Russians, three Tadjiks and two Uzbeks.

The accused are two Muscovites - Mendeleyev Chemical & Technological University student Oleg Kostyrev, 20, and Moscow Social University student Ilya Tikhomirov, 20, whom the vendors caught straight after the explosion. The students explained they arranged the explosion “to take revenge on illegal aliens, who filled Russia and stage acts of terror here.”

Kostyrev and Tikhomirov named their accomplice, Valery Zhukovtsev, a student of Moscow Transport Engineers University. Zhukovtsev, 18, was jailed yesterday.

The masterminds, Kostyrev and Tikhomirov, first thought about the explosion long ago, Semin said. In one of the Internet forums, they learnt how to make a primitive derivative of jelly explosive, nitroglycerin, by using nitric acid, sulfuric acid, glycerin and sugar powder.

The choice of Cherkizovo market wasn’t accidental; there are “too many persons of the Asian nationality there.” The students arrived at Cherkizovo by metro, carrying two bags with the nitroglycerin bombs. This explosive, the experts say, is very unstable and can detonate anytime.

In Cherkizovo, Kostyrev and Tikhomirov left the bags in the underpass between Eurasia and Novy AST stores, near the toilette and Vietnamese café. Zhukovtsev, who was expected to help them flee, left the market before his friends and escaped the vendors.

Despite the national hatred reasons, the Moscow prosecutor doesn’t think the trio belongs to some extremist political parties or religious organizations.
