Moldova to Do Without Energy of Russia
Represented by Inter RAO UES, Russia terminated export of electric energy to Moldova May 1, 2006 and refused to prolong the agreement on its transit deliveries via Ukraine, Andrey Ivanchuk, acting president at Energy Company of Ukraine (NAK ECU) announced yesterday. Moscow said in return NAK ECU’s subsidiary, Ukrinterenergo, isn’t willing to negotiate the deliveries. Ukraine endeavors to force Russia out of the energy market of Moldova, the analysts speculate.
The export of Russia’s energy to Moldova via Ukraine terminated on expiration of agreement between Ukrinterenergo and Inter RAO UES. Spokesmen of Inter RAO said the company attempted to negotiate the extension past year and adjust payment terms to the actual condition of domestic energy markets of Russia and Ukraine. No response followed and the energy deliveries to Moldova via the Ukrainian grid stopped May 1.
But Moldova isn’t short of electric power, as “terminated deliveries of Russia’s energy were replaced by additional electric energy of Ukraine,” Ivanchuk said, adding extra deliveries of energy to Moldova yield much more than the transit.
According to representatives of Moldelectrica, Moldova has no problems with electric power, never minding whether it has mixed energy of Ukraine and Russia or the energy of Ukraine exclusively.
Besides, Moldova’s PM Vasile Tarlev vowed some time ago Moldova and Ukraine intend to seal a long-term agreement on deliveries of Ukrainian energy and its transit to the Balkan states.
