Rosneft Named Growth Leader
The Platts agency has published its annual list of the Top 250 Global Energy Companies. Russian companies made a good showing based on the main criteria of value of assets, receipts, net profit and return on invested capital. All of the companies in the rating have assets over $2 billion. ExxonMobil tops the list for the fourth year in a row, although the compilers of the rating note a general downward tendency in American companies, which have lost 30 percent of their combined standing since the list began in 2001.
American company ConocoPhillips dropped from 10th to 16th place in the rating. Occidental Petroleum dropped out of the top 20. Marathon Oil went from 13th to 18th. British BP dropped from 2nd to 5th, but European companies in general rose. The French Total came up from 5th to 3rd, ENI from 8th to 6th and German E.On and RWE broke into the top 20.

Rosneft made its debut on the rating last year, at 16th place. This year, it leads all Russian companies at 6th place, thanks to its acquisition of YUKOS assets. LUKOIL has led the Russians in previous ratings. This year it rose from 12th to 11th place. Gazprom also passed it, however, rising from 17th to 10th place. Surgutneftegaz dropped from 29th to 40th place. Analysts note that Rosneft, Gazprom Neft and TNK-BP show especially good return on invested capital.

Russian companies made an even better showing on the list based on growth rate (based on total receipts for three years). Rosneft was in first place, up from 9th. Gazprom, NOVATEK (moving from 187th to 151st in the general rating), Gazprom Neft, LUKOIL, TNK-BP, Surgutneftegaz and Tatneft (84th to 81st) also figured in that rating.
