Georgia Invites the UN to the Kodori Gorge
Georgia said Thursday it is ready to allow UN military observers to start monitoring the upper part of the Kodori Gorge, ITAR-TASS reported.
“Georgia is perfectly ready to provide conditions for the UN monitoring in the Upper Kodori Gorge,” Georgian Minister for Conflict Resolution Merab Antadze said. “We are currently waiting for suggestions from the UN military observer mission in Georgia.” The minister said the monitoring may be held soon.
Merab Antadze met UN Security General’s Special Representative to Georgia Jean Arnault and “discussed a number of issues concerning the UN mission in Georgia, including the UN monitoring operation in the Upper Kodori Gorge.”
The UN held its last monitoring the Kodori Gorge in 2003. Last week, Minister Merab Antadze said Georgia was against the participation of Russian peacekeepers in the monitoring.
The Foreign Ministry of the breakaway republic of Abkhazia said Tuesday the Kodori Gorge should be patrolled only by Russian peace keepers and UN military observers. Abkhazia expressed a concern that Georgia demands that the Kodori be patrolled without Russians. The Sukhumi officials also pointed out to the fact that the participation of Russian peacekeepers is mentioned in the 1994 Moscow Treaty.
