Secret Equipment Exploded at Baikonur Cosmodrome
Russia’s military are liquidating secret equipment and pyrotechnic devices at Baikonur cosmodrome, Interfax reported. The blasting operations started past week and continued on Monday, December 8.
The military are destroying pyrotechnic devices and equipment which service life has expired. The operations are ongoing at a special firing ground, eight kilometers away from Baikonur, close to Saturn tracking station.
Similar operations are annually carried out at Baikonur. This year, however, due to the disbandment of the Space Force unit staff stationed at the cosmodrome, the servicemen are destroying all equipment and explosives kept at the military warehouses.
The construction of world’s oldest Baikonur cosmodrome started far back January 12, 1955, on the birthday of Russia’s famous designer Sergei Korolev. The spaceport is the launching pad for boost rockets of all types and for the manned spaceships. Kazakhstan obtained Baikonur after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and Russia has to lease the facility now. So it isn't surprising that Roskosmos plans to construct its own cosmodrome in the Far East, the sources said.
