Nissan Sales Soar in Russia
Sales of Japanese Nissan automobiles in Russia rose 29.7 percent between January and November 2008, in comparison with the same period of 2007, to reach 134,677 vehicles, the Russian office of the company announced on Tuesday. November was not a particularly successful month for the company, however. It sold 7218 cars, 31.4 percent less than November 2007. Between January and November, Nissan sold 6970 Infiniti models (the maker’s luxury model), which is up 41.4 percent over last year. In November, it sold 719 Infinitis, an increase of 18 percent over November 2007.
Nissan had lowered its sales projections for Russia by 10 percent, from 170,000 vehicles, in connection with the world economic crisis. The company sold a total of 116,500 vehicles in Russia in 2007, 5500 of which were Infinitis.

Nissan Motors’ net profits for the first half of the 2008-2009 financial year (the half-year ended on September 30) were down 40.5 percent to 126.34 billion yen ($1.28 billion). Sales were down 3.8 percent in that period, from 5.06 trillion yen ($51.41 billion) to 4.87 trillion yen ($49.48 billion). Operating profit was down 47.8 percent in that period, to 191.65 billion yen ($1.95 billion).

Nissan Motors was founded in 1933. It is one of Japan’s leading carmakers. It has plants in Japan, the United States, Great Britain, Spain, China, Thailand, Kenya and other Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries. Its annual receipts top 10 trillion yen (about $100 billion) and it has over 186,000 employees.
