Russians Say Baby Ruins Lifestyle
Almost half of all Russians (48%) say that the birth of a baby makes a family’s material conditions worse. That was discovered by the All-Russia Center for the Study of Public Opinion (Russian abbreviation VTsIOM). Almost half of all Russians (47%) disagree, however. Younger respondents had more hopeful perceptions of life with children. About 46 percent of Russians think a baby limits freedom and parent’s opportunities for self-realization. However, 49 percent do not agree with that. In addition, 44 percent of respondents consider children a hindrance to career growth, and 47 percent do not.
A majority of respondents (79%) say the birth of a child strengthens the parents’ relationship. Only 15 percent disagreed. A third (34%) off parents spent more than 6 hours with their non-adult children every day. Another 30 percent spent 3-5 hours, and 27 percent spent no more than 2 hours. Mothers spend more time with their children than fathers. Forty-eight percent of women and 17 percent of men spend more than 6 hours a day with their children. Most parents (70%) play with or teach their children every day. Another 15 percent say they do so two or three times a week; 7 percent say 1-4 times a month; 1 percent say several times a year and 2 percent say never.

The survey was conducted by VTsIOM June 28-29, 2008. There were 1600 respondents in 153 towns in 46 regions, territories and republics. The statistical error is 3.4 percent.
