British Intelligence Calls Russia a Threat
The British special services consider Russia one of the main threats to the security of Great Britain, The Times of London reports. Beyond Russian intelligence, the top two threats are identified as Al-Qaeda and Iran. “Russia’s three main intelligence agencies have flooded the country with agents,” the newspaper notes and the British are forced to spend many resources to counteract Russian industrial and military espionage.
The newspaper mentions that Russian agents have been accused of involvement in the death of former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko in London and several attempted murders, which led to a deterioration in relations between Russia and Britain in the era of Vladimir Putin and Tony Blair. The British intelligence’s opinion was published just before a meeting between British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. That meeting will take place on Monday in Hokkaido before the G8 summit.
