Federer Considers Safin a Threat
The world’s top men’s player Roger Federer sees Russian Marat Safin, whom he will play in the semifinal match at Wimbledon, as a very dangerous opponent. The Swiss player said so at a press conference after his victory over Croat Mario Ancic 6:1, 7:5, 6:4. Safin beat Spaniard 31st-seeded Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinal on Wednesday in four sets 3:6, 7:5, 7:6 (7:1), 6:3.
"I never look at Marat as a 89th in the world," said Federer. "That's ridiculous and he knows that himself. He's showing again what he can do. It's just surprising he does it here at Wimbledon, because he used to dislike playing on this [grass] surface." Federer went on to say that it is too early to write off the former world champion.
Federer confessed that he will find it interesting to play Safin. He said that he was not happy to play Safin last year, and is never happy to do so, as the Russian player might be aware. Federer said that, while he has been disappointed with Safin’s recent playing, he hopes the Russian player catches a second wind.
