Kazan Chosen for the 2013 Universiade
The International University Sports Federation (French abbreviation FISU) has announced that Kazan has been chosen for the site of its 2013 summer Universiade. Voting for the site of the event took place on Saturday in Brussels. The capital of Tatarstan won over Gwangju, South Korea, and Vigo, Spain. Kazan received 20 of 27 votes in the FISU executive committee.
The Tatar Inform agency stated that 48 facilities will be used in the upcoming event. Construction has already begun on additional facilities, including housing, tennis courts and a new stadium. The budget for the event will be about 22 billion rubles.
Kazan also competed to host the 2011 Universiade, but lost to Shenzhen, China, by two votes. The RIA Novosti agency has reported that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called Kazakh president Mintimer Shaimiev to congratulate him on the selection of Kazan for the 2013 Universiade. The 2013 winter Universiade will be held in Maribor, Slovenia, which was the sole candidate for the event.
