Russia Has No Intention to Make War with Georgia
Moscow pledged Tuesday to toughly respond to any attempts of Georgia to apply force against the peacekeepers and citizens of Russia in the unrecognized republics. In Tbilisi, they claim that the recent actions of Russia, including deployment of additional contingent of peacekeepers have increased the risk of the military standoff in the conflict area.
“Russia doesn’t intend to make war with Georgia. We give lots of facts proving that Georgia’s leadership might be plotting the forceful settlement of problems of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Either directly or secretly, Georgia’s leaders are acquiring considerable quantities of offensive weapons,” said Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Tbilisi breaches the agreements on Kodori Gorge, where no military of Georgia should be stationed under the resolution of the U.N. Security Council, Lavrov specified.

“And of course, the notorious flight of the drone in Abkhazia that the U.N. representatives unambiguously classified as gross violation of the existing regime in the conflict area,” Lavrov pointed out.

Lavrov said he will hand over to the E.U. envoys today “lots of materials proving the agreements’ breach by Georgia.”

The moves of Russia taken in respect of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are aimed at defending rights of Russia’s residents in the unrecognized republics in time when Georgia is continuously stepping up the military presence near the conflict areas, the RF Foreign Ministry announced earlier.

The Unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia has been seeking independence from Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
