Russia, the United States to be Linked by a Car Tunnel, Britain’s Media Said
An automobile tunnel will run under the Bering Strait to link Russia and the United States, Britain’s media supposed to explain the purchase of world’s largest drill by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
The project connecting Russia’s Chukotka and the U.S. Alaska will cost roughly £33 billion (ˆ40 billion); the length of the tunnel will be around 80 kilometers, Britain’s media calculated.

The spokesmen of Abramovich, however, promptly denied the rumors. “This connection is entirely fictitious", John Mann, who is the briefer of Abramovich, told The Daily Telegraph.

But the denial failed to discourage the media. According to German reporters, Abramovich probably needs the drill not for cold Chukotka, where he is the governor, but for the warm water of the Black Sea. The drill could be used to dig tunnels to improve infrastructure of Sochi, which will host the Winter Olympics in 2014.

But the most probable explanation is that buying the drill made by German firm Herrenknecht AG is a good investment targeted at future revenues. Even its lease will annually yield ˆ800 million to the owner, German journalists said.
