Russian Navy Holds Atlantic Exercises
The Russian Navy is holding military exercises in the Northeast Atlantic that will include the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and the missile carrier Moskva, RIA Novosti reports. An aide to commander of the Russian Navy Capt. Igor Dygalo stated that missiles will be fired from the Moskva during the training and planes will fly to and from the aircraft carrier. The ships will also practice interaction with other Russian Air Force strategic craft and planes of the Northern Fleet coastal planes.
The Moskva joined the Northern Fleet strike force on January 18 in the western Mediterranean Sea. When the full unit was formed, it sailed into the Atlantic Ocean and began its exercises, which are being commanded from on board the Admiral Kuznetsov. The ships of the Northern Fleet left on a 71-day long-distance mission on December 5, 2007. The squadron will travel 12,000 nautical miles in that time.
