Russia to Show Qabala Capacity to U.S. Experts
In presence of Azerbaijan's envoys, experts of Russia and the United States will check Tuesday ability of Qabala radar to control the rocket-and-space environment and the launch of missiles from Iran and North Korea, said First Deputy Chief of Russia’s Space Force Staff Maj Gen Alexander Yakushin.
The U.S. and Azerbaijan’s experts will arrive from Baku to the checkpoint September 18, 2007 at roughly 1:00 p.m., MSK., Yakushin said, adding the meeting will last for three to four hours.
“The matter at stake is not just to show the station but to persuade and actually show that the Qabala Radar Station is capable of tackling the tasks of controlling exactly the south direction, which worries our American partners most of all,” Yakushin pointed out.
Should it be necessary to work for some definite country, we would show it, Yakushin made clear. “We are ready to discuss and prepare proposals for authorities. The main task today is to adequately respond to the threats that really exist in the south direction, not some future hypothetic threats of 2020 to 2025,” the major general explained.
Russia advocates using the Qabala radar as alternative to the U.S. intention to station ten interceptors in Poland and a radar in the Czech Republic to counter potential threat of some rogue states, mostly Iran.
