Probe Into Politkovskaya Murder Reached Breakthrough
Investigation of Anna Politkovskaya murder nears the end. Basmanny Court of Moscow has arrested today 10 people on suspicion of killing the opposition journalist and the charges will be presented very soon.
It was Prosecutor General Yury Chaika that reported the breakthrough to President Vladimir Putin without disclosing any details. In Basmanny Court, they gave no names either, referring to “interests of investigation.”
According to previous reports, the basic lead is that the killing resulted from professional activities of the journalist.
Novaya Gazeta investigating reporter Anna Politkovskaya was shot in Moscow October 7, 2006 as she left her apartment to get into the lift. Her neighbor discovered the body along with Makarov gun. The prosecutors opened the case on count of attempted murder and promised to pay 25 million rubles for the information about killers.
The extent of the global response to this crime is hard to overestimate. Politkovskaya was the symbol of independent journalism, the U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said after the murder.
